Configuring Icon Map Pro for Power BI Report Server
Icon Map Pro is compatible with Power BI Report Server, including in on-premises environments, with the full range of its capabilities available.
Report Server Requirements
Icon Map Pro has been tested with the May 2025 (Update) and January 2026 version of Power BI Report Server.
Environments with Internet Access
Icon Map Pro should work with no specific additional configuration in environments (server and clients) that have unrestricted access to the internet.
The server, report author and report viewer machines need access to resources at the following domains.
Microsoft resources required to validate and import Icon Map Pro from Microsoft AppSource:
- pbivisuals.powerbi.com
- appsource.powerbi.com
Icon Map resources:
- styles.iconmappro.com - for background maps
- validate.iconmappro.com - for license validation
- iconmapcatalogapi-frd8gydxhyarhvh2.northeurope-01.azurewebsites.net - Icon Map Catalog
- catalog.icon-map.com - Icon Map Catalog
- iconmappropublictiles.blob.core.windows.net - Icon Library
- iconmapprolicensingfunction.azurewebsites.net - trial & developer license key requests
Third Party:
- https://unpkg.com/@mapbox/mapbox-gl-rtl-text@0.2.3/mapbox-gl-rtl-text.min.js - for right-to-left map labels
Licensing
Microsoft do not support User-based licensing for Power BI Report Server, so it will be necessary to use our usage-based license model, or contact sales@icon-map.com for bespoke licensing.
User-based licenses should still work in Power BI Desktop for report authors with internet access.
Air-gapped / restricted environments
In order to use Icon Map in an environment without full internet access, it is necessary to prevent Power BI from attempting to access Microsoft AppSource to validate and download custom visuals. Without this, custom visuals may appear as blank space in the reports.
Environment Variable
On the Report Server itself, and on all machines editing Power BI reports using Power BI Desktop, create a PBI_userFavoriteResourcePackagesEnabled environment variable with the value 0.
You can find step by step instructions on how to do this in Microsoft's documentation.
Adding Icon Map to the Report
When importing Icon Map into your Power BI report in Power BI Desktop, use the "Import visual from a file" option, rather than "Get more visuals". This will ensure that the visual is stored as part of your .pbix file.
If you have already created a report using the AppSource version of the visual, you will need to re-import the visual using the "import from file" option.
You can download the latest Icon Map visuals from our releases page.
Report Server Setting
Using SQL Server Management Studio to connect to SSRS, view the server properties. Under the Advanced section, set the User-defined property "EnableCDNVisuals" to False.
You will then need to restart Power BI Report Server.
This setting should prevent a delay in displaying Icon Map within the reports, while Power BI Report Server attempts and fails to connect to AppSource.
Icon Map Setting
In the format pane for Icon Map, expand the Icon Map Pro section, and under customization, enable the "Airgapped Environment" setting. This will prevent Icon Map from making unnecessary external calls to resources that it can't access. It will also remove the option for Icon Map Catalog layers which require internet access to work.
Licensing
Please contact sales@icon-map.com to discuss license options for air-gapped Reporting Services environments, as our usage-based license model requires an internet connection.
Background Maps for Air-Gapped Environments
When using Icon Map in an air-gapped environment without internet access, the visual will not be able to access the built-in background mapping, image library, or Icon Map Catalog, as these are hosted externally on Icon Map servers.
You can either run the visual without background maps, use your own compatible mapping service, or contact sales@icon-map.com to purchase our self-hosted background maps pack.
Configuration instructions for our self-hosted maps can be found here.
