Icon Map from Tekantis has announced the launch of Icon Map Catalog, a new feature within Icon Map that makes it much easier to find and use geographic data inside Microsoft Power BI.
Icon Map Catalog gives Power BI developers direct access to ready-to-use geospatial datasets that can be added to maps in just a few clicks. Instead of searching for spatial datasets, preparing large boundary files and configuring them for use in reports, users can simply browse the Catalog, select the layer they need and add it directly to their map.
Ending the cycle of repetitive data preparation
For many Power BI developers, the hardest part of building a map is not the analysis. It is the preparation that happens before it.
Geospatial files often need to be created from multiple sources, converted to the right format and simplified so are small enough to load into Power BI. The process can take days or even weeks.
“We saw hundreds of different organizations spending time preparing exactly the same datasets,” said James Dales, Founder of Tekantis.
“With spatial analysis, the challenge is rarely the insight. It is the preparation work that comes before it. Icon Map Catalog does that work once so that others don't have to.”
What Icon Map Catalog offers
Icon Map Catalog provides a curated library of geospatial datasets that can be used directly within Power BI.
Users can browse and add datasets, such as census boundaries, deprivation indices, population data, and environmental risk layers, directly from the Icon Map interface. Each dataset is prepared to perform efficiently in Power BI while preserving the geographic detail needed for meaningful analysis.
There are already hundreds of datasets available across a range of geographies and themes, and the Catalog will continue to grow over time. Users can also request additional datasets, allowing the library to expand based on real-world analytical needs.
Availability
Icon Map Catalog will be available from 12 March. Organisations already using Icon Map on a usage plan will see the feature appear automatically within Power BI and can begin using it immediately without requiring a separate purchase. For those not currently on a usage plan, Icon Map Catalog will also be available as an add-on through Microsoft AppSource with straightforward user-based pricing.
